Hypertext

Hypertext is text structured with links that connect documents or passages, allowing movement between related information rather than requiring a single linear sequence.

Hyperlink: A clickable or otherwise actionable reference that connects one digital resource or location to another. Hyperlinks provide the connections through which hypertext navigation occurs.
Memex: Vannevar Bush's proposed machine for storing records and creating associative trails among them. Memex anticipated personal navigation through linked information, despite never being built as described.
World Wide Web: A global information system of interlinked resources accessed over the Internet. The Web made hypertext widely accessible through networked pages and browsers.
Linear narrative: A narrative presented in a fixed sequence from beginning to end. Hypertext can offer branching paths instead of one prescribed reading order.
Nonlinear narrative: A narrative whose events or sections are presented outside a single chronological or fixed sequence. Linked paths make nonlinearity a structural option for hypertext authors.
Anchor (hypertext): A designated point in a document that can serve as the destination or source of a link. Anchors let links target specific passages instead of only whole documents.
Vannevar Bush: An American engineer and science administrator who proposed the Memex in 1945. His vision of associative trails helped inspire later hypertext systems.
HTML: The standard markup language used to structure documents on the Web. HTML supplies the elements and attributes commonly used to create Web links.
Printed book: A bound collection of printed pages arranged for reading in a physical sequence. Print can contain references, but following them does not provide hypertext's direct traversal.
Information architecture: The organization and labeling of information to support finding and understanding it. Hypertext links make the design of relationships among information central to usability.
