Knowra Hyperthermia Hyperthermia Hyperthermia is an abnormal rise in body temperature without an elevated hypothalamic set point. It occurs when heat production or heat gain exceeds the body's ability to dissipate heat.
Thermoregulation : The physiological control of body temperature through heat production, conservation, and loss. Hyperthermia develops when heat-balance controls cannot keep body temperature within its usual range.
Exertional heat stroke : Heat stroke caused by strenuous physical activity, often in hot or humid conditions. It is a hyperthermic emergency driven by intense muscular heat production.
Core body temperature : The temperature of deep tissues and internal organs, estimated with measurements from sites such as the esophagus or rectum. Reliable core measurements help establish the severity of suspected hyperthermia.
Rhabdomyolysis : The breakdown of skeletal muscle that releases intracellular contents into the bloodstream. Severe heat illness can damage muscle and trigger this complication.
Heat stroke : A life-threatening illness involving severe hyperthermia and central nervous system dysfunction. It is a dangerous form of hyperthermia in which thermoregulatory failure can damage organs.
Classic heat stroke : Heat stroke caused mainly by environmental heat, often during prolonged heat waves. It illustrates how ambient heat can overwhelm cooling, especially in vulnerable people.
Heat illness : A spectrum of disorders caused by excessive environmental or internally generated heat. Hyperthermia can progress across this spectrum from mild illness to life-threatening emergencies.
Acute kidney injury : A rapid decline in kidney function that disrupts fluid, electrolyte, and waste balance. Dehydration, muscle breakdown, and heat-related tissue injury can impair the kidneys.
Heat exhaustion : A heat-related illness caused by fluid and salt loss during prolonged heat exposure or exertion. It can precede heat stroke, though severe central nervous system dysfunction is absent.
Drug-induced hyperthermia : An abnormal rise in body temperature caused by a medication or recreational drug. Stimulants and other substances can increase heat production or impair heat loss.
