Hypokalemia

Hypokalemia is an abnormally low concentration of potassium in the blood. It can disrupt electrical signaling in muscles and nerves, with effects ranging from weakness to dangerous heart rhythms.

Potassium homeostasis: The regulation of potassium distribution and concentration in the body. It explains how kidneys, hormones, and cells normally keep blood potassium within a narrow range.
Diuretic: A drug that increases urine production, often by altering kidney salt and water handling. Loop and thiazide diuretics can increase urinary potassium loss.
Potassium: A chemical element and essential electrolyte whose ions support cellular electrical activity. Hypokalemia describes a low concentration of this electrolyte in blood.

Pseudohypokalemia: A falsely low measured blood potassium caused by potassium uptake by cells after blood collection. It can mimic hypokalemia in laboratory results without representing the patient's in-body concentration.
Aldosterone: A steroid hormone that promotes sodium retention and potassium excretion by the kidneys. Excess aldosterone can increase renal potassium loss and lower blood levels.
Muscle weakness: Reduced ability to generate or sustain voluntary muscle force. It is a common manifestation when low potassium impairs muscle excitability.
