Hypothalamic-pituitary axis

A neuroendocrine control system in which hypothalamic signals regulate pituitary hormone release, coordinating endocrine glands and body functions.

Hypothalamus: A brain region that regulates autonomic, endocrine, and homeostatic functions. It produces releasing and inhibiting signals that direct pituitary activity.
Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis: An endocrine pathway linking hypothalamic CRH and pituitary ACTH to adrenal cortisol secretion. It is the axis’s best-known route for coordinating hormonal stress responses.
Pituitary adenoma: A usually benign tumor arising from pituitary cells that can alter hormone secretion or compress nearby structures. An adenoma can disrupt pituitary output and thereby change several downstream endocrine pathways.
Anterior pituitary: The glandular pituitary lobe that synthesizes and secretes hormones under hypothalamic regulation. Unlike the posterior lobe, it receives hypothalamic instructions mainly through portal blood.
Pituitary gland: An endocrine gland beneath the hypothalamus that secretes hormones regulating growth, reproduction, stress, and other glands. Its lobes translate hypothalamic input into hormones released to the body.
Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis: An endocrine pathway linking hypothalamic TRH and pituitary TSH to thyroid hormone production. It shows how the system regulates metabolism through a peripheral gland.
Cushing syndrome: A disorder caused by prolonged exposure to excessive cortisol from any source. Its causes distinguish pituitary-driven ACTH excess from adrenal or medication-related cortisol excess.
Posterior pituitary hormones: Oxytocin and vasopressin, peptides synthesized in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. Their neural delivery differs from the anterior lobe’s releasing-hormone pathway.
Hypophyseal portal system: A network of blood vessels carrying hypothalamic hormones directly to the anterior pituitary. It delivers regulatory signals without first diluting them in systemic circulation.
Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis: An endocrine pathway linking hypothalamic GnRH and pituitary gonadotropins to gonadal function. It coordinates reproductive hormones through pulsatile hypothalamic signaling.
