Hypoxia (environmental)

Hypoxia is a condition in which dissolved oxygen in water is too low to support many aquatic organisms, often causing stress, displacement, or death.

Eutrophication: Nutrient enrichment of an ecosystem that increases biological production and can degrade water quality. Nutrient-fueled production and decay often raise oxygen demand in waters that become hypoxic.
Gulf of Mexico dead zone: A seasonally recurring region of low oxygen on the Louisiana–Texas continental shelf. It is a major example of nutrient-driven seasonal hypoxia in coastal waters.
Hypoxia threshold: A dissolved-oxygen concentration below which aquatic organisms face impaired function or survival. Threshold choices determine when monitoring programs classify water as hypoxic.
Marine dead zone: A marine area where oxygen is too scarce for most organisms to survive or remain active. Hypoxia creates dead zones when affected waters become extensive or persistent.
Climate change and ocean oxygen: The effects of climate-driven warming and circulation changes on oxygen in marine waters. Warming can lower oxygen solubility and strengthen stratification, complicating hypoxia forecasts.
Biochemical oxygen demand: The oxygen microorganisms consume while decomposing organic matter in water. It measures the microbial respiration that removes dissolved oxygen during organic matter breakdown.
Baltic Sea hypoxia: Widespread oxygen depletion in deep basins of the brackish Baltic Sea. Restricted exchange and nutrient loading sustain extensive oxygen-poor bottom waters.
Dissolved oxygen sensor: An instrument that measures oxygen concentration in water using electrochemical or optical methods. Sensors reveal where and when low-oxygen conditions develop.
Fish kill: A sudden mass death of fish, often caused by environmental stress or poor water quality. Severe hypoxia can leave fish unable to obtain enough oxygen.
Coastal upwelling: The rise of deep, nutrient-rich water toward the ocean surface along coasts. Upwelling can bring naturally oxygen-poor water onto shelves, apart from local nutrient pollution.
