Iambic tetrameter

Iambic tetrameter is a poetic meter with four iambic feet per line, typically producing eight syllables with alternating unstressed and stressed beats.

Iamb: A metrical foot consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. Four repetitions of this foot define the meter.
"Because I could not stop for Death": A poem by Emily Dickinson in which Death personified as a suitor takes the speaker on a carriage journey. Its alternating long and short lines make iambic tetrameter especially audible.
Iambic pentameter: A poetic meter built from five iambic feet per line. Adding a fifth iamb makes lines longer and changes their customary cadence.
Ballad: A narrative poem or song, often shaped by recurring stanzas and a memorable rhythm. Iambic tetrameter is common in ballads, often alternating with shorter lines.
