Ian Wilmut

Ian Wilmut (1944–2023) was a British embryologist who led the research team that created Dolly the sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell.

Keith Campbell: Keith Campbell was a British biologist whose research helped produce Dolly the sheep through nuclear transfer. Campbell was a key member of Wilmut’s Roslin Institute team and contributed substantially to the cloning work.
Somatic cell nuclear transfer: Somatic cell nuclear transfer is a cloning technique that places a cell nucleus into an egg whose own nucleus has been removed. This was the method used to create Dolly from an adult mammary cell.
Adult cell cloning: Adult cell cloning produces an organism using genetic material from a differentiated cell of an adult organism. Dolly demonstrated this possibility in a mammal, overturning expectations about cell specialization.

Oocyte: An oocyte is an immature egg cell that can mature and support fertilization or experimental embryo development. An enucleated oocyte supplied the cellular environment for Dolly’s transferred nucleus.
