Iannis Xenakis

Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001) was a Greek-French composer, architect, and engineer who used mathematical models, probability, and mass sound to shape music.

Stochastic music: Music composed using probability theory to determine events such as pitches, durations, or densities. Xenakis developed this approach to organize large-scale musical textures.
Metastaseis: A 1953–54 orchestral work by Xenakis built around evolving string glissandi. Its sweeping sound trajectories connect his architectural thinking with orchestral composition.
Greek Resistance: The movement opposing Axis occupation of Greece during World War II. Xenakis joined the resistance, and the war shaped his early life and political commitments.
Hermann Scherchen: A German conductor and teacher who supported contemporary music and composers. Scherchen mentored Xenakis and helped bring his early works to performance.
