IARC Group 1

IARC Group 1 is the International Agency for Research on Cancer category for agents classified as carcinogenic to humans, based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in humans or compelling evidence from other sources.

IARC Monographs: IARC publications that evaluate whether agents can cause cancer in humans. These monographs assemble the evidence used to place an agent in Group 1.
IARC Group 2A: The IARC category for agents probably carcinogenic to humans. It signals stronger evidence than Group 2B but falls short of Group 1.
Tobacco smoking: The inhalation of smoke produced by burning tobacco, exposing users and bystanders to toxic compounds. IARC classifies tobacco smoking as carcinogenic to humans.
International Agency for Research on Cancer: The World Health Organization agency that coordinates and conducts international cancer research. IARC develops the Monographs program and assigns the carcinogenicity classifications.
Carcinogen: An agent capable of causing cancer in living tissue. Group 1 identifies agents judged to cause cancer in humans.
IARC Group 2B: The IARC category for agents possibly carcinogenic to humans. Its evidence of human carcinogenicity is more limited than the Group 1 standard.
Asbestos: A group of naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals formerly used in many construction and industrial products. IARC classifies all forms of asbestos as carcinogenic to humans.
IARC Monographs Programme: The IARC program that evaluates evidence on agents' carcinogenic hazards to humans. Its expert working groups assess evidence and determine whether an agent belongs in Group 1.
Epidemiology: The study of health outcomes and their patterns in populations. Human population studies can provide direct evidence that an agent causes cancer.
IARC Group 3: The IARC category for agents not classifiable as to their carcinogenicity to humans. Group 3 means evidence is inadequate for classification, not that an agent is safe.
