Ibn Arabi

Ibn Arabi (1165–1240) was an Andalusian Sufi mystic and philosopher whose works developed influential accounts of divine unity, spiritual knowledge, and the relationship between God and creation.

Sufism: The mystical dimension of Islam, centered on spiritual purification and direct knowledge of God. Ibn Arabi’s thought emerged from Sufi disciplines and became a major source for later Sufi traditions.
Wahdat al-wujud: A label for the doctrine of the unity of existence associated with Ibn Arabi and his later interpreters. It names the metaphysical position most often used to summarize, and sometimes oversimplify, his thought.
Ibn Rushd: An Andalusian philosopher and jurist whose commentaries on Aristotle influenced Islamic and European thought. The reported encounter between Ibn Rushd and Ibn Arabi became emblematic of tensions between reason and mystical knowledge.
Fusus al-hikam: A short work by Ibn Arabi interpreting the wisdom associated with 27 prophets. This compact book became a central focus of commentary on his teachings.
Tashbih and tanzih: The paired Islamic theological principles of affirming God’s nearness and likeness while denying comparison with creation. Ibn Arabi’s thought gives unusual weight to holding divine incomparability and manifestation together.
Tawhid: The Islamic doctrine of God’s absolute oneness and uniqueness. His metaphysics explores how divine unity relates to the multiplicity of the created world.
Perfect Man: A human being who embodies the fullest possible realization of divine names and spiritual knowledge. Ibn Arabi presents the Perfect Man as a comprehensive mirror of divine self-disclosure.
Sadr al-Din al-Qunawi: A Persian Sufi philosopher who systematized and transmitted Ibn Arabi’s teachings. Al-Qunawi helped make Ibn Arabi’s difficult metaphysics a structured intellectual tradition.
Al-Futuhat al-Makkiyya: Ibn Arabi’s extensive work on theology, cosmology, spiritual practice, and religious knowledge. It offers his broadest account of Sufi life and metaphysical ideas.
Literalism: An interpretive approach that gives primary weight to the direct wording of a text. Critics have contrasted his symbolic and esoteric readings with approaches emphasizing textual wording.
