Ibrahim Nasir

Ibrahim Nasir was a Maldivian politician who served as president from 1968 to 1978 and helped lead the Maldives to independence from Britain.

Independence of the Maldives: The end of British protection and establishment of Maldivian independence in 1965. Nasir helped negotiate the transition that ended British control over Maldivian foreign affairs and defense.
Sultanate of the Maldives: A monarchy that governed the Maldives before the republic was established in 1953 and restored in 1954. Nasir entered national politics while the sultanate remained the country’s governing institution.
