Icebreaker

An icebreaker is a vessel designed to navigate through or break sea ice. Its reinforced hull and propulsion system let it open or maintain routes that ordinary ships cannot safely cross.

Icebreaking bow: A bow shaped to ride onto sea ice and fracture it under a vessel’s weight. Its sloping form helps the ship climb onto ice instead of striking it head-on.
Icebreaker escort: The service of an icebreaker guiding other vessels through ice-covered waters. Escorts let ships without heavy ice protection follow a passage opened by the icebreaker.
City of Berlin (icebreaker): A German icebreaking steamship launched in 1894 for service in the Baltic Sea. Its early purpose-built design marked a step beyond ordinary ships adapted for ice.
Ice-strengthened ship: A ship reinforced for limited navigation in ice without being designed to break heavy ice. It can travel in suitable conditions but may need an icebreaker to open or maintain a route.
Ice-strengthened hull: A ship hull reinforced to withstand pressure and impacts from ice. Reinforced plating and framing protect the vessel as broken ice presses against its sides.
Arctic shipping: The transport of goods and people by sea through Arctic waters. Icebreakers extend the season and routes available to Arctic maritime traffic.
Yermak (icebreaker): A Russian icebreaker launched in 1898 and designed for high-latitude ice navigation. Yermak helped establish the modern, ocean-going icebreaker as a distinct ship type.
Ice-class cargo ship: A cargo vessel built to meet a specified standard for operating in ice. Its ice capability supports independent seasonal travel, unlike the dedicated path-clearing role of an icebreaker.
Azimuth thruster: A propulsion unit that can rotate to direct thrust in different directions. Steerable thrust helps maneuver in confined ice and clear fragments from the hull.
Polar research vessel: A ship equipped to conduct scientific research in polar regions. Some icebreakers carry laboratories and deploy instruments while traveling through polar ice.
