Icelandic independence movement

The political campaign that ended Iceland’s constitutional union with Denmark and established the Republic of Iceland in 1944.

Old Icelandic Commonwealth: A medieval Icelandic polity governed through assemblies and chieftains from about 930 to 1262. Its memory and institutions supplied a historical frame for claims to Icelandic self-government.
Danish–Icelandic Act of Union: The 1918 agreement recognizing Iceland as a sovereign state in personal union with the Danish king. It established sovereignty while reserving a later decision on whether the union would continue.
Sveinn Björnsson: An Icelandic statesman who served as regent and became the first president of Iceland in 1944. As regent during the king’s absence, he represented Iceland’s authority before the republic was declared.
British occupation of Iceland: The British military occupation of Iceland from 1940 to 1941 during the Second World War. It disrupted Iceland’s practical ties with Denmark and changed the setting for the final independence decision.

Hermann Jónasson: An Icelandic politician who served as prime minister during key years of the independence process. His governments navigated wartime circumstances and the move to constitutional separation.
United States occupation of Iceland: The wartime deployment of United States forces to Iceland beginning in 1941, following the British occupation. It reinforced Iceland’s wartime separation from Danish authority.
Icelandic national revival: A nineteenth-century movement to strengthen Icelandic language, culture, and political self-determination. It formed the cultural and political foundation for the later independence campaign.
Icelandic parliamentary election, 1942: The election that produced an Althingi majority supporting termination of the union with Denmark. Its result gave elected representatives a mandate to proceed with constitutional separation.
