Idris I of Libya

Idris I was Libya’s first and only king, ruling from independence in 1951 until a military coup deposed him in 1969.

Sanusi Order: A Sufi Muslim order founded in 1837 that became a major religious and political force in Libya. Idris inherited leadership of the order, which anchored his authority in Cyrenaica.
Kingdom of Libya: The sovereign Libyan state established in 1951 and governed as a monarchy until the 1969 coup. It was the political system Idris headed as king.
