Idrisid dynasty

The Idrisid dynasty was an Islamic ruling house founded by Idris I that governed parts of present-day Morocco from 788 to 974. Its rule helped establish an enduring center of Islamic political and religious life in the region.

Idris I of Morocco: Idris I was a descendant of Hasan ibn Ali who founded the Idrisid state in Morocco. His arrival in Morocco in 788 began the dynasty.
Idris II: Idris II was the son of Idris I and the second ruler of the Idrisid dynasty. He consolidated his father’s state and established its lasting political center.
University of al-Qarawiyyin: The University of al-Qarawiyyin is an institution of Islamic learning in Fez, founded as a mosque in 859. Its foundation belongs to the city’s growth under Idrisid rule.
Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba: The Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba was an independent Islamic state in al-Andalus from 929 to 1031. Its intervention in the Maghreb made it a rival to the later Idrisids.
Battle of Fakhkh: The Battle of Fakhkh was a 786 revolt against Abbasid rule near Mecca, in which Idris I’s supporters were defeated. Idris I fled west after the revolt’s defeat.
Fez: Fez is a city in northern Morocco founded in the late eighth century. Idris II made Fez the Idrisid capital and a center of rule.
Morocco: Morocco is a country in northwestern Africa, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Idrisids established an early ruling state within the territory of modern Morocco.
Fatimid Caliphate: The Fatimid Caliphate was an Ismaili Shi'a empire founded in North Africa in 909. Fatimid expansion into the Maghreb helped end Idrisid political independence.
Awraba: The Awraba were an Amazigh group whose leader, Ishaq ibn Muhammad, supported Idris I in Morocco. Their alliance supplied the political and military base for Idris I’s rule.
Amazigh peoples: Amazigh peoples are the Indigenous peoples of North Africa, with diverse languages and communities. Idrisid power depended on alliances with Amazigh communities.
