Igor Tamm

Igor Tamm (1895–1971) was a Soviet theoretical physicist who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics for explaining Cherenkov radiation.

Pavel Cherenkov: A Soviet physicist whose observation of light emitted by charged particles moving through a medium led to the discovery of Cherenkov radiation. Cherenkov observed the phenomenon that Tamm and Ilya Frank explained theoretically.
Cherenkov detector: A particle detector that identifies or measures charged particles using their Cherenkov light. Detectors turn the radiation Tamm helped explain into practical measurements of particle velocity and identity.
Cherenkov radiation: Light emitted when a charged particle travels through a medium faster than light propagates through that medium. This is the phenomenon Tamm explained with Ilya Frank and the work recognized by the Nobel Prize.
