Ijazah

An ijazah is a scholarly authorization granting its recipient permission to transmit a text or teach a body of knowledge. It is often grounded in a chain of named teachers.

Isnad: A chain of transmitters documenting how a report or teaching passed from one person to another. An ijazah’s authority can rest on a named chain linking its holder to earlier teachers.
Ulama: Muslim scholars trained in religious disciplines and recognized for their learning. Ulama granted and received ijazahs within scholarly networks.
Quran recitation: The oral performance of the Quran according to established rules of pronunciation and recitation. Ijazahs can certify permission to teach or transmit a particular recitation tradition.
Islamic Golden Age: A period of flourishing scholarship and cultural activity across parts of the Islamic world, especially from the eighth to thirteenth centuries. Expanding scholarly networks helped make personal authorization and transmission central to learning.
Ijaza: A legal permission in Islamic jurisprudence allowing an act that would otherwise be restricted or requiring authorization. Ijaza is a legal permission, whereas ijazah is a scholarly authorization to transmit or teach.
Samaʿ: The practice of listening to a teacher recite or dictate a text. Listening to a text read by an authorized teacher could establish a basis for transmission.
Madhhab: A school of Islamic jurisprudence associated with a tradition of legal interpretation. Legal teaching authorized by ijazah could be situated within a particular madhhab.
Qira'at: Recognized modes of Quranic recitation transmitted through established chains of authorities. A reciter’s ijazah may authorize transmission of one or more qira'at.
Nizam al-Mulk: An eleventh-century Seljuk vizier who established and supported a network of madrasas. His educational institutions illustrate the changing institutional settings in which scholars taught.
Academic accreditation: A formal assessment that an educational institution or program meets defined quality standards. Accreditation evaluates institutions or programs, while ijazah authorizes an individual’s scholarly activity.
