Iltutmish

Iltutmish was the third ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, reigning from 1211 to 1236. He consolidated the Mamluk dynasty’s authority in northern India and strengthened Delhi as the sultanate’s capital.

Delhi Sultanate: A series of Muslim-ruled dynasties that governed much of northern India from Delhi between 1206 and 1526. Iltutmish's reign established the political foundations of this larger state.
Ghurid dynasty: A medieval dynasty based in Ghor that conquered territories across Iran, Afghanistan, and northern India. Iltutmish entered political life in the Indian territories created by Ghurid expansion.
Chahalgani: A group of powerful Turkish nobles associated with the early Delhi Sultanate and known as the Forty. Iltutmish cultivated this elite corps, whose members later influenced succession politics.
Battle of Tarain (1216): A battle in which Iltutmish defeated Taj al-Din Yildiz near Tarain in 1216. The victory removed a major rival and asserted Delhi's independence from Ghazni.
Razia Sultana: The daughter of Iltutmish who ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1236 to 1240. His preference for Razia led to a rare female accession and fierce opposition among nobles.
Iqta: A land-revenue assignment granted by a ruler to an official or military commander in return for service. Iltutmish used revenue assignments to support officials and troops across his territories.
Mu'izz al-Din Muhammad: The Ghurid ruler who led major campaigns into northern India in the late twelfth century. His conquests created the setting in which Iltutmish rose to power.
Taj al-Din Yildiz: A Ghurid military commander who ruled Ghazni and contested authority over the former Ghurid territories in India. Iltutmish defeated Yildiz at Tarain in 1216, strengthening his claim to independent rule.
Qutb Minar: A monumental minaret in Delhi begun under Qutb al-Din Aibak and completed by Iltutmish and later rulers. Its additions are among the most visible surviving works associated with his reign.
Delhi: A major city in northern India that served as the capital of the Delhi Sultanate. Iltutmish made Delhi the sultanate's enduring political center.
