Ilya Prigogine

Ilya Prigogine was a Belgian physical chemist whose work on nonequilibrium thermodynamics explained how organized structures can arise and persist in systems exchanging energy with their surroundings.

Thermodynamics: The science of heat, work, energy, and the macroscopic properties of matter. Prigogine extended thermodynamic reasoning beyond systems in equilibrium.
Dissipative structure: An organized state maintained in an open system by continuous exchanges of energy or matter. Prigogine introduced this concept to describe order sustained far from equilibrium.
