Ilya Repin

Ilya Repin (1844–1930) was a Ukrainian-born Russian realist painter known for psychologically vivid portraits and dramatic historical scenes, including Barge Haulers on the Volga and Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks.

Barge Haulers on the Volga: Repin’s painting of laborers hauling a barge along the Volga River, completed in 1873. Its exhausted workers made Repin’s realist attention to social hardship widely visible.
