Imamate in Shia Islam

Imamate is the Shia doctrine that divinely guided leaders from Muhammad’s family hold religious authority. Its accounts of succession, the number of Imams, and their status differ among Shia traditions.

Ali ibn Abi Talib: Ali ibn Abi Talib was Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law, the fourth caliph in Sunni accounts, and the first Imam in Shia Islam. Shia accounts identify Ali as the first Imam and the starting point of hereditary leadership.
Twelver Shia Islam: Twelver Shia Islam recognizes twelve Imams descended from Ali and regards the twelfth as in occultation. It is the largest Shia tradition and gives the doctrine its best-known sequence of twelve leaders.
Succession to Muhammad: Succession to Muhammad concerns the leadership of the Muslim community after his death in 632. The doctrine developed amid disagreements about who should lead the community after Muhammad.
Husayn ibn Ali: Husayn ibn Ali was Muhammad’s grandson and the third Imam in Twelver and Ismaili traditions. His stand at Karbala became a defining example of an Imam’s moral authority.
Marja' al-Taqlid: A marja' al-taqlid is a qualified Twelver jurist whom followers may emulate in matters of religious law. Maraji' provide practical legal guidance during the Twelfth Imam’s occultation.
Ahl al-Bayt: Ahl al-Bayt is the Arabic term for Muhammad’s household, whose membership is interpreted differently across Islamic traditions. The Imams’ authority is grounded in their connection to Muhammad’s household.
Ismailism: Ismailism is a Shia tradition that recognizes Isma'il ibn Ja'far or his descendants as rightful Imams. A disputed succession after Ja'far al-Sadiq produced a distinct continuing line of Imams.
Ghadir Khumm: Ghadir Khumm is a site associated with a report that Muhammad publicly praised or designated Ali shortly before his death. Shia interpretation treats the reported declaration as evidence of Ali’s appointment.
Zayd ibn Ali: Zayd ibn Ali was a great-grandson of Ali who led an unsuccessful revolt against Umayyad rule in 740. His legacy anchors Zaydi ideas of qualified, activist leadership.
Wilayat al-Faqih: Wilayat al-faqih is the doctrine that a qualified Islamic jurist holds guardianship or governing authority, especially during the Imam’s occultation. It offers one influential account of political authority while the Twelfth Imam is absent.
