Imamate of Oman

The Imamate of Oman was an Ibadi Muslim polity whose imams governed parts of Oman intermittently, traditionally traced to 751, until its final independent stronghold fell to Muscat in 1959.

Ibadi Islam: A distinct branch of Islam whose communities historically concentrated in Oman and parts of North Africa. Its doctrines and institutions supplied the religious framework for the imamate.
Abu al-Khattab al-Ma'afiri: An early Ibadi imam who led a revolt in North Africa in the eighth century. His era belongs to the early history from which Omani Ibadi political institutions developed.
Battle of Nizwa (1957): A 1957 battle in which Omani government forces captured Nizwa during the Jebel Akhdar conflict. Its outcome marked the loss of a central stronghold of the revived imamate.
Sultanate of Muscat and Oman: The coastal Omani state ruled by the Al Said dynasty before the modern Sultanate of Oman. It competed with the imamate for sovereignty and absorbed its last stronghold in 1959.
Imamate: A form of leadership in which an imam heads a Muslim community, with meanings that vary across Islamic traditions. The Omani state took its name from this office and made it the basis of political authority.
Jabir ibn Zayd: An early Muslim scholar from Oman, regarded as a foundational figure in Ibadi tradition. His teaching helped establish the religious tradition later associated with Oman's imams.
Jebel Akhdar War: A conflict from 1954 to 1959 between forces of the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman and supporters of the imamate. The war ended the imamate's last period of independent territorial rule.
Al Said dynasty: The ruling dynasty of Oman since the eighteenth century. Hereditary dynastic rule offered a rival basis of authority to the imamate's elected office.
Omani Ibadi imamate election: The process by which Ibadi scholars and community leaders selected an imam in Oman. Selection by leading religious figures distinguished the office from straightforward hereditary succession.
Abbasid Caliphate: A caliphate founded in 750 that ruled much of the Islamic world from Baghdad. Early Omani imamate traditions developed amid resistance to caliphal authority.
