Immanence

Immanence is the presence or activity of divine reality within the world, rather than solely beyond it. It contrasts with transcendence without necessarily denying it.

Transcendence: The condition of existing beyond or exceeding the limits of the ordinary world. It names the other pole in the distinction between divine presence within the world and beyond it.
Sacred: That which is set apart as holy, inviolable, or spiritually significant. Immanence allows sacred significance to be located within worldly things and events.
God: The supreme being or ultimate divine reality in a religious tradition. Immanence describes one way God may relate to the world.
Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose works shaped Western philosophy and theology. His account of form and substance informed later debates about divine presence within nature.
Divine providence: The belief that God sustains and guides the world and its events. Immanence helps explain how providence can involve ongoing divine activity within creation.
Pantheism: The view that God and the universe are identical. It is one strong form of identifying divine reality with the world, not merely locating divinity within it.
Nature religion: Religious traditions and practices that treat nature as a primary site of sacred power or presence. It illustrates religious attention to divine or sacred presence within the natural world.
Divine: Relating to a god or to a sacred, transcendent reality. The concept concerns how divine reality is present or active in worldly existence.
Plotinus: A third-century philosopher who founded the Neoplatonic tradition. His system describes reality flowing from the One while remaining dependent on its source.
Divine action: The ways God is understood to act in the world. Immanence frames divine action as occurring within worldly processes rather than only from beyond them.
