Immortality

Immortality is the condition of living forever or being exempt from death. It appears in religious doctrines, philosophical arguments, myths, and speculative science.

Afterlife: An afterlife is a proposed mode of existence that begins after a person's death. It offers continued existence after death without requiring an undying body.
Biological immortality: Biological immortality is the absence of an intrinsic increase in mortality risk with age. It describes a living organism’s aging pattern, not exemption from accidents or destruction.
Tithonus: In Greek myth, Tithonus receives eternal life but not eternal youth, and ages without end. His fate warns that endless life without renewed youth can become a curse.
Aging: Aging is the progressive biological change that raises vulnerability to disease and death over time. Understanding aging is central to attempts to extend life indefinitely.
Personal identity: Personal identity concerns the conditions under which someone remains the same person over time. An immortal being must retain enough continuity to count as the same person.
Eternal life: Eternal life is unending existence, often understood in religious traditions as life with God. Religious accounts often distinguish blessed eternal life from mere endless survival.
Immortality (philosophy): Philosophical immortality is the possibility that a person continues to exist without end, often after bodily death. It asks whether personal existence can persist independently of a living organism.
Ambrosia: Ambrosia is the food or drink of the Greek gods, associated with their immortality. It represents immortality as a divine privilege sustained by a special substance.
Senescence: Senescence is the gradual deterioration of function associated with aging in organisms or cells. Cellular senescence is one biological process targeted by proposed life-extension therapies.
Mind uploading: Mind uploading is the hypothetical transfer of a mind’s information or processes to a computational system. It raises whether a digital copy would preserve a person or merely imitate them.
