Imperial coronation

An imperial coronation was a ceremony that conferred the title of emperor within the Holy Roman Empire. Its form and political significance changed over the empire’s history.

Election of the Holy Roman Emperor: The selection of a king of the Romans by designated German princes, whose choice could lead to imperial rule. Election usually established the ruler whose status a coronation would elevate.
Coronation of Charlemagne: The ceremony in Rome on Christmas Day 800 in which Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor. It became a foundational precedent for later Western imperial coronations.
Charlemagne: King of the Franks who became emperor in 800 and built a large western European empire. His coronation established the precedent later emperors invoked.
King of the Romans: The title of the elected ruler of the Holy Roman Empire before or without imperial coronation. The title increasingly carried effective rule even when an emperor’s coronation never followed.

Imperial election: The election of a Holy Roman ruler by the empire’s prince-electors. As coronation became less necessary, election supplied the decisive source of legitimacy.
Anointing: A religious rite in which oil is applied to a person to signify consecration or blessing. Anointing marked the ruler’s imperial office as sacred, not merely political.
Translatio imperii: The medieval idea that legitimate imperial authority passed successively between empires and peoples. This theory framed the Holy Roman Empire as heir to Roman and Carolingian rule.
