Imperial Diet

The Imperial Diet was the assembly of the estates of the Holy Roman Empire, including princes, ecclesiastical rulers, and free cities. It negotiated laws, taxes, war, and other affairs of the Empire.

Holy Roman Empire: A Central European polity that lasted, in varying forms, from the Middle Ages until 1806. The Diet was the Empire’s central assembly of territorial and civic estates.
Hoftag: A medieval assembly convened by a German king or emperor to consult leading nobles and churchmen. Hoftage were predecessors of the more structured Imperial Diet.
Peace of Augsburg: A 1555 settlement that allowed rulers in the Holy Roman Empire to choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism for their territories. The Diet at Augsburg made this settlement a framework for religious coexistence.

Golden Bull of 1356: A constitutional decree of Emperor Charles IV that regulated the election of the Holy Roman Emperor. It formalized the elector college that became a central part of the Diet.
Peace of Westphalia: The 1648 treaties that ended the Thirty Years’ War and reshaped political and religious relations in Europe. The Diet later incorporated the settlement’s provisions into imperial law.
German Bundestag: The directly elected federal parliament of the modern German Republic. Its popular representation contrasts with the Diet’s representation of corporate estates.
Elector: A prince entitled to elect the Holy Roman Emperor under the Empire’s constitutional order. Electors formed a privileged college within the Diet.
Reichstag at Worms (1495): A 1495 Imperial Diet that adopted major reforms, including the Ewiger Landfriede and the Imperial Chamber Court. Its reforms strengthened the Diet’s role in imperial governance.
