Imperial examination

A system used in imperial China to select government officials through examinations, chiefly testing mastery of Confucian texts and literary composition.

Confucian classics: A body of texts central to Confucian teaching, including works on history, ritual, poetry, and governance. Candidates were examined on these texts, which supplied the system’s shared intellectual curriculum.
Sui dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 581 to 618 and introduced examinations to recruit officials. Sui rulers began using examinations as an alternative to relying solely on inherited status.
Zhu Xi: A Song-dynasty philosopher whose interpretations of Confucian texts became foundational to later state education and examinations. His commentaries shaped the orthodox readings candidates were expected to master.
Scholar-official: A literate government official whose authority rested partly on classical education and bureaucratic service. The examinations helped create and legitimate this governing elite.
Hereditary aristocracy: A social and political elite whose rank and privilege pass primarily through family inheritance. Examinations offered an alternative principle of recruitment, though family advantage still affected preparation.
Eight-legged essay: A formal essay genre with a prescribed structure, used in late imperial Chinese examinations. Its rigid form made literary composition a standardized test of candidates’ learning.
Tang dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907 and expanded the use of examinations in government recruitment. Tang institutions developed the examination system beyond its early Sui foundations.
Han Yu: A Tang-dynasty writer and official who advocated renewed commitment to Confucian learning. His literary and intellectual legacy illuminates the cultural authority later attached to classical learning.
Mandarin: A Western term for an official in imperial China, especially one associated with the educated bureaucracy. Examination success was a major route into the official class commonly called mandarins.
Civil service examination: A competitive examination used to select or advance personnel in public administration. Imperial China’s system is a long-running historical example of this broader institution.
