Imperial German Navy

The Imperial German Navy was the naval force of the German Empire from 1871 until the empire’s collapse in 1918. Its expansion challenged British maritime supremacy and helped shape the naval arms race before World War I.

Tirpitz Plan: A program of German naval expansion, pursued from the 1890s, intended to make the fleet powerful enough to deter Britain. It set the strategic rationale for building a battle fleet capable of threatening the Royal Navy.
German unification: The process that brought most German states together under Prussian leadership in 1871. Unification created the empire whose federal institutions included a national navy.
