Imperial Immediacy

Imperial immediacy was the status of being directly subject to the Holy Roman Emperor or Empire, without an intervening territorial lord. It gave recognized communities and rulers distinct legal and political standing within the Empire.

Holy Roman Empire: A Central European polity that lasted from the Middle Ages until its dissolution in 1806, headed by an elected emperor. Imperial immediacy defined direct relationships to this polity and its emperor.
Feudalism: A varied set of medieval relationships involving landholding, personal allegiance, and obligations between lords and dependents. Its layered lordship provides a contrast to direct subjection to the emperor.
Free imperial city: A city in the Holy Roman Empire governed directly under imperial authority rather than by a territorial prince. Free imperial cities were among the most visible corporate holders of immediacy.
German mediatisation: The 1803–1814 process that absorbed many small states and ecclesiastical territories into larger German states. It extinguished the immediacy of numerous imperial territories during the Empire’s final years.
Imperial Estate: A person or corporate body holding a recognized position in the Holy Roman Empire’s political order. Many immediate rulers and communities held estate status and participated in imperial institutions.
Territorial state: A state whose authority is organized over a defined territory and its inhabitants. Territorial rulers often stood between the emperor and subjects who lacked immediacy.
Imperial abbey: A monastery or convent directly subject to the Holy Roman Emperor and possessing imperial privileges. Some religious houses held immediate status as territorial and political authorities.
Peace of Lunéville: A 1801 treaty between France and Austria that confirmed French control of the Rhine’s left bank and prompted territorial compensation in Germany. Its territorial settlement set in motion major compensations that weakened immediate ecclesiastical territories.
Imperial Diet: The assembly of the Holy Roman Empire’s estates, which deliberated on imperial laws, taxation, and political affairs. Immediate estates could hold representation in this assembly.
Sovereignty: Supreme authority over a political community or territory. Immediate status granted substantial autonomy but did not make every holder fully sovereign.
