Impermanence

Impermanence is the condition of being subject to change and eventual passing away. It describes the instability of all conditioned things, from physical forms to thoughts and social arrangements.

Anicca: The Buddhist teaching that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent. Anicca gives impermanence its central doctrinal formulation in Buddhism.
Dependent origination: The Buddhist account that phenomena arise through conditions and cease when their supporting conditions end. Conditional arising explains why things change rather than persist independently.
Gautama Buddha: The spiritual teacher traditionally regarded as the founder of Buddhism. Early Buddhist teaching made impermanence a basic feature of conditioned existence.
Vipassana: A Buddhist meditation practice of insight into bodily and mental phenomena. Observing sensations as they arise and pass makes impermanence a direct object of practice.
Eternalism: The metaphysical view that some entities or truths are eternal and unchanging. Eternalism directly opposes the claim that conditioned things do not remain fixed.
Memento mori: A reminder that human beings are mortal and will die. Impermanence becomes a prompt to remember death and reconsider how life is spent.
Five aggregates: The five changing components through which Buddhism analyzes personal experience: form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. Their continual alteration challenges the assumption of a stable person.
Heraclitus: A pre-Socratic Greek philosopher associated with the idea that reality is characterized by change. His surviving fragments present change as fundamental to the world.
Mindfulness: The practice of attending to present experience with sustained, nonreactive awareness. Careful attention can reveal thoughts and sensations changing moment by moment.
Parmenides: A pre-Socratic Greek philosopher who argued that genuine being is ungenerated, imperishable, and unchanging. His account of unchanging being stands against philosophies that treat change as fundamental.
