Impressment

Impressment is the compulsory seizure of people, especially sailors, for military service. It was most associated with Britain’s recruitment of sailors for the Royal Navy.

Press gang: A group that forcibly recruited people, especially sailors, for military service. Press gangs were the agents most closely associated with British naval impressment.
Impressment in the Royal Navy: The British practice of compelling men, particularly seamen, to serve in the Royal Navy. This was the most prominent historical form of impressment.
