Imre Kertész

Imre Kertész (1929–2016) was a Hungarian novelist and Holocaust survivor whose fiction examined totalitarianism, freedom, and the experience of persecution. He received the 2002 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Fatelessness: Imre Kertész’s 1975 novel follows a Hungarian Jewish teenager through Auschwitz and Buchenwald. This autobiographical novel established the distinctive perspective at the center of Kertész’s work.
