Human diversity : Variation among people in abilities, characteristics, identities, experiences, and circumstances. Inclusive design begins by treating this variation as an ordinary condition of use.
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines : International recommendations for making web content perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. They turn digital inclusion goals into testable guidance for web content.
Digital divide : The gap between people who have effective access to digital technologies and those who do not. Design choices can either reduce or deepen barriers to digital participation.
Persona (user experience) : A research-based fictional profile representing a group of users and their goals, behaviors, and constraints. Personas can make overlooked user circumstances visible, but must reflect real diversity.
Disability : A condition arising from interactions between impairments and barriers in society or the environment. This interactional view helps locate exclusion in design, not only in individual bodies.
Accessible Rich Internet Applications : A technical specification that adds semantics and interaction support for assistive technologies in web applications. It helps dynamic interfaces communicate controls and state to users of assistive technology.
Assistive technology : Products and systems that maintain or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. Inclusive products must often work alongside tools people use to access them.
Participatory design : An approach that involves people affected by a design in decisions throughout its development. Direct participation helps expose exclusion that designers’ assumptions may miss.
Situational disability : A temporary limitation in ability caused by a person’s circumstances or environment. A user holding a child or facing glare may encounter barriers similar to those associated with impairment.
