Incomplete dominance

Incomplete dominance is an inheritance pattern in which a heterozygote has a phenotype intermediate between the phenotypes of the two homozygotes.

Heterozygote: An organism or cell with two different alleles at a genetic locus. The intermediate phenotype appears in individuals carrying two different alleles.
Four o’clock plant: A flowering plant, Mirabilis jalapa, whose flowers can be red, white, or pink. Crossing red- and white-flowered plants produces pink heterozygous offspring.
Complete dominance: An inheritance pattern in which one allele determines the heterozygote’s phenotype as in one homozygote. Unlike incomplete dominance, the heterozygote resembles the dominant homozygote.
Homozygote: An organism or cell with two identical alleles at a genetic locus. The two homozygous phenotypes provide the endpoints for comparison.
Gene dosage: The number of copies of a gene or the amount of its product in a cell. A reduced dose of functional product can yield an intermediate trait.
Snapdragon: A flowering plant, Antirrhinum majus, cultivated in several flower colors. Its red and white flower alleles produce pink flowers in heterozygotes.
Codominance: An inheritance pattern in which both alleles are distinctly expressed in a heterozygote. Both traits remain visible in codominance rather than forming an intermediate.
Genetic locus: A specific position or region on a chromosome where a genetic sequence is located. The pattern is described for alleles at a particular locus.
Allele: One of the alternative versions of a DNA sequence at a genetic locus. The two alleles contribute differently to the heterozygote’s phenotype.
Human hair texture: A human trait influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors, including hair-shaft shape. Hair texture is sometimes presented as an intermediate-inheritance example, though its genetics are complex.
