Independent record label

An independent record label releases and promotes music outside the corporate structure of the major record companies. It may be privately owned, artist-run, or part of a smaller independent group.

Artist and repertoire: The record-company function of discovering artists and selecting music for release. A label’s roster begins with choices about which artists and recordings to develop.
Major record label: A large record company belonging to one of the dominant global music groups. Its corporate ownership and resources provide the clearest contrast to independent operation.
Independent music: Music made and circulated outside the dominant commercial structures of the industry. Independent labels are one institutional form of a broader musical and cultural movement.
Artist-run label: A record label founded or managed by musicians to release their own or other artists’ music. It gives artists direct control over release decisions and label operations.
College radio: Radio broadcasting produced by colleges and universities, often with noncommercial programming. College stations have given independent releases airplay beyond commercial radio formats.
Music distribution: The delivery of recorded music to retailers, streaming services, and listeners. Distribution determines how an independent release reaches audiences beyond the label’s own channels.
Major record companies: The small group of globally dominant corporations that control major music businesses. Independent status is defined in relation to this corporate tier.
Punk rock: A rock music movement associated with stripped-down sound and opposition to established norms. Punk scenes fostered small labels that could release music overlooked by major companies.
Record label services: Commercial services that help artists or labels distribute, market, or administer recordings without a traditional label deal. Service arrangements let independent labels outsource selected tasks while retaining other control.
Mixtape: A curated sequence of recorded music, distributed historically on tape and later in digital formats. Mixtapes have helped independent artists circulate music and build audiences outside label campaigns.
