Indian Air Force
The Indian Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of India’s armed forces, responsible for air defence, military aviation, and air support.
Indian Air Force aircraft: The aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force for combat, transport, training, surveillance, and other missions. Aircraft are the service’s primary means of conducting missions across air defence, strike, and transport.
Royal Indian Air Force: The name used by India’s air force from 1945 until India became a republic in 1950. The modern service inherited its organization and traditions from this predecessor.
Kargil War: The 1999 armed conflict between India and Pakistan in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. Operation Safed Sagar used air power to support Indian forces in high-altitude combat.
Indian Army: The land warfare branch of India’s armed forces. Its ground operations often depend on air support, but it has a separate command structure.
Indian Air Force ranks: The hierarchy of commissioned and non-commissioned ranks used by the Indian Air Force. Ranks define authority and responsibility within the service’s command structure.
Indian independence: The end of British rule in India in 1947 and the establishment of independent dominions. Independence transformed the air force from a colonial service into a national one.
Operation Safed Sagar: The Indian Air Force operation supporting Indian ground forces during the 1999 Kargil War. It is the service’s defining example of air support in high-altitude warfare.
Indian Navy: The maritime warfare branch of India’s armed forces. The Navy focuses on maritime operations, while the Air Force maintains a broader air mission.
Air defence: The detection, interception, and defeat of hostile air threats to protect people, forces, and territory. Defending Indian airspace is a central operational mission of the service.
Partition of India: The 1947 division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan. Partition divided personnel, equipment, and military responsibilities between the new states.
