Indian National Army

The Indian National Army was a force of Indian prisoners of war and expatriates that fought British rule during World War II, first under Japanese sponsorship and later under Subhas Chandra Bose.

Indian soldiers in Japanese captivity: Indian Army personnel captured by Japan during its campaigns in Southeast Asia in World War II. Their recruitment from prisoner-of-war camps supplied the INA’s first troops.
Subhas Chandra Bose: An Indian nationalist leader who headed the INA from 1943 and led the Provisional Government of Azad Hind. Bose reorganized the force and became its most prominent leader.
Lakshmi Sahgal: An Indian physician and independence activist who commanded the INA’s Rani of Jhansi Regiment. Her leadership made the women’s regiment a visible part of the INA.
Battle of Imphal: A 1944 battle in northeastern India in which Allied forces defeated a Japanese offensive. INA units accompanied the Japanese advance toward Imphal before it failed.
British Indian Army: The army recruited in India and commanded by Britain, which served across the British Empire before and during World War II. The INA recruited partly from its captured personnel but fought against British command.
Mohan Singh: An officer of the British Indian Army who organized the first Indian National Army in 1942. He built the first INA from Indian prisoners of war in Japanese hands.
Azad Hind: The name used for the Provisional Government of Free India established by Subhas Chandra Bose in 1943. The government supplied the INA with a declared political authority and independence claim.
Shah Nawaz Khan: An officer who served in the INA and was one of three defendants in the 1945–46 Red Fort trial. His trial made the INA’s former officers central figures in public debate.
Battle of Kohima: A 1944 battle in northeastern India that halted the Japanese advance toward India. Its outcome helped end the campaign in which the INA sought to enter India.
Indian Independence Movement: The broad political and social struggle to end British rule in India. The INA was one armed strand within a much larger independence movement.
