Indian New Wave

Indian New Wave is a period of formally adventurous filmmaking that gained momentum from the late 1960s onward, challenging commercial conventions through social realism and experimentation.

Mrinal Sen: An Indian filmmaker whose politically engaged films used formal experimentation and often focused on social conflict. His films helped establish the movement’s experimental, politically alert cinema.
Bhuvan Shome: A 1969 Hindi film by Mrinal Sen about a railway official whose hunting trip alters his outlook. Its success is often treated as a catalyst for the Hindi New Wave.
Film Finance Corporation: An Indian state film-financing body established in 1960 to support films outside dominant commercial production. Its loans helped finance several early works associated with the New Wave.
Art cinema: Filmmaking that prioritizes artistic expression and formal exploration over conventional commercial entertainment. The movement belongs to a wider international turn toward director-led cinema.
National Film Development Corporation of India: An Indian public-sector film organization formed in 1975 that finances and supports film production and distribution. Its later role continued state support for filmmaking beyond mainstream commercial production.
Shyam Benegal: An Indian filmmaker known for realist films examining social structures, rural life, and power. His early films brought the movement’s social realism to a wide audience.
Ankur: A 1974 Hindi film by Shyam Benegal about caste, gender, and power in a rural community. It made social realism a defining public face of the movement.
Film and Television Institute of India: A national film school in Pune, founded in 1960, that trains filmmakers and screen professionals. Its graduates supplied directors and craftspeople to the movement’s emerging production networks.
Social realism: An artistic approach that depicts ordinary lives and social conditions with attention to material detail. It gave many New Wave films a grounded alternative to idealized commercial worlds.
Regional cinema in India: Film industries and traditions organized around India’s many languages and regional cultures. New Wave filmmaking expanded the visibility of distinctive regional cinemas.
