Indian Ocean raid

A Japanese naval offensive in April 1942 against Allied shipping and bases across the Indian Ocean, including Ceylon. It demonstrated Japan’s capacity to project carrier air power far beyond Southeast Asia.

Imperial Japanese Navy: Japan’s naval service from 1869 to 1945, responsible for maritime operations during the Pacific War. Its carrier force organized and executed the Indian Ocean offensive.
Easter Sunday Raid: A Japanese air raid on Colombo, Ceylon, on 5 April 1942. It opened the major air attacks on Ceylon during the offensive.
Fall of Singapore: The surrender of British forces in Singapore to Japan on 15 February 1942. Singapore’s capture gave Japan a stronger position for operations into the Indian Ocean.
Eastern Fleet: The Royal Navy formation responsible for Allied operations in the Indian Ocean during World War II. After the attacks, it withdrew toward East Africa to avoid another carrier strike.
Aircraft carrier: A warship that carries, launches, and recovers aircraft at sea. Carriers let Japanese aircraft strike targets across the ocean without nearby airfields.
Colombo: The largest city and principal port of Sri Lanka, then known as Ceylon. Japanese aircraft attacked its harbor and airfields on 5 April 1942.
Japanese invasion of Burma: Japan’s 1942 campaign to seize Burma from British and Allied forces. The campaign’s western advance formed part of the wider pressure on Allied positions around the Indian Ocean.
James Somerville: A British admiral who commanded the Eastern Fleet during the Indian Ocean raid. His decision to disperse and withdraw the fleet reduced the risk of a decisive Japanese attack.
Akagi: A Japanese aircraft carrier that served as the flagship of the First Air Fleet during the Pacific War. Akagi was among the carriers that launched the April 1942 strikes.
Trincomalee: A natural harbor on Ceylon’s northeast coast and a major British naval base during World War II. The second major attack on Ceylon targeted its harbor and nearby airfields.
