Indigofera

Indigofera is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family Fabaceae. Several species contain precursors used to produce indigo dye.

Indigo dye: A deep-blue dye historically obtained from plants and now also produced synthetically. Leaves of some Indigofera species provide precursors for this dye.
Indican: A colorless plant glycoside that can be converted into indoxyl, a precursor of indigo. Some Indigofera leaves store this precursor rather than blue pigment itself.
Fabaceae: A large family of flowering plants that includes peas, beans, and many nitrogen-fixing species. Indigofera belongs to this family of legumes.
Indigofera trita: A widespread Indigofera species occurring across tropical and subtropical regions. It is a representative wild species distinct from major cultivated dye plants.
