Indium

Indium is a soft, silvery-white metal with atomic number 49. Its low melting point and ability to form transparent conductive coatings make it useful in alloys and electronics.

Indium tin oxide: A transparent conducting ceramic made mainly from indium oxide and tin oxide. This coating lets touchscreens and displays conduct electricity while transmitting visible light.
Indium crystal structure: The tetragonal arrangement of atoms in solid indium. Its crystal structure helps explain why indium is unusually soft and readily deformed.
Ferdinand Reich: A German chemist and physicist who co-discovered indium in 1863. Reich identified the new element through its distinctive emission spectrum.
Critical minerals: Minerals whose supply disruption would significantly affect economies or essential technologies. Indium’s concentrated, by-product supply makes it vulnerable to shifts in zinc production.
Gallium: A soft metal with atomic number 31 that melts near room temperature. Like indium, gallium forms low-melting alloys, but it is lighter and melts at a lower temperature.
Liquid-metal cooling: A cooling technique that circulates liquid metal to transfer heat from a source. Indium-based alloys can serve as low-melting liquid coolants in specialized systems.
Metallic bonding: Chemical bonding in which delocalized electrons bind a lattice of metal atoms. Delocalized electrons account for indium’s electrical conductivity and metallic luster.
Hieronymous Theodor Richter: A German chemist who co-discovered indium with Ferdinand Reich in 1863. Richter helped isolate the metal after its spectral signature revealed it in ore.
Indium recycling: The recovery of indium from manufacturing scrap and discarded products. Recycling can reduce demand for newly refined indium, though dispersed coatings are difficult to recover.
Tin: A malleable metal with atomic number 50, widely used in alloys and coatings. Tin is indium’s neighbor in the periodic table and a major component of indium tin oxide.
