It sets measurable goals and describes how the student will participate in school.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act : A U.S. federal law that guarantees eligible children with disabilities special education and related services. IDEA requires IEPs and establishes the rights and procedures governing them.
Present levels of academic achievement and functional performance : The IEP section describing a student’s current academic and functional abilities and how disability affects school participation. These descriptions provide the baseline for goals and explain why services are needed.
Individualized education program meeting : A meeting where the IEP team develops, reviews, or revises a student’s individualized education program. The meeting is where team members discuss evidence, make decisions, and document the plan.
Section 504 plan : A school plan for providing disability-related accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Unlike an IEP, a 504 plan does not itself provide IDEA special education services.
Free appropriate public education : The IDEA guarantee that eligible students receive appropriate special education and related services at public expense. An IEP is the principal plan for delivering this guarantee to an individual student.
Measurable annual goal : A specific, measurable outcome an IEP team expects a student to achieve within a year. Annual goals state the progress the services and instruction are intended to support.
IEP implementation : The delivery of the instruction, services, accommodations, and supports specified in a student’s IEP. A written plan benefits a student only when the school provides its required provisions.
Individualized family service plan : A plan under IDEA Part C coordinating early-intervention services for an eligible infant or toddler and family. It serves children under three in early intervention, rather than school-age students through an IEP.
Special education eligibility : The legal determination that a student meets disability and educational-need criteria for special education under IDEA. A student must qualify under IDEA before an IEP is required.
Specially designed instruction : Instruction adapted in content, methodology, or delivery to address a student’s disability-related needs and support access to the curriculum. An IEP specifies this instruction when the student needs it to make progress.
