Indo-Islamic architecture

Indo-Islamic architecture comprises South Asian buildings that combine Islamic forms and functions with regional materials, construction techniques, and artistic practices.

Islamic architecture: Architecture shaped by Islamic religious, social, and political practices across diverse regions and periods. Its arches, domes, and spatial conventions supplied forms adapted in South Asia.
Trabeated construction: A building system in which horizontal beams rest on vertical supports. It remained influential alongside arcuate construction in South Asian Islamic buildings.
Delhi Sultanate: A succession of Muslim dynasties that ruled much of northern India from 1206 to 1526. Its rulers sponsored some of the earliest major Islamic monuments in northern India.
Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque: A mosque complex in Delhi begun in the late twelfth century under the Delhi Sultanate. Its early construction displays reused temple materials and evolving Islamic architectural forms.
Indo-Saracenic architecture: A nineteenth- and early twentieth-century colonial style combining South Asian forms with European building practices. Colonial architects reworked Indo-Islamic motifs into a distinct modern architectural language.

Alai Darwaza: A monumental gateway built in Delhi in 1311 for the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque complex. Its true arches and dome mark a sophisticated phase of Sultanate construction.
Mughal gardens: Formal gardens developed under Mughal patronage, often arranged around water channels and geometric divisions. Garden design became an integral part of the planning of Mughal tombs and palaces.
