Indo-Scythian Kingdom

The Indo-Scythian Kingdom was a series of realms established by Saka peoples in Central and South Asia from around the second century BCE. Its rulers governed parts of the northwest Indian subcontinent and issued distinctive bilingual coinage.

Saka: An ancient Iranian-speaking people known in Greek sources as Scythians, many of whom migrated across Central Asia. Saka groups supplied the ruling dynasties and military migrations behind Indo-Scythian power.
Yuezhi: A Central Asian confederation that migrated westward and southward during the second and first centuries BCE. Yuezhi expansion helped displace groups associated with the Saka migrations toward South Asia.
Gandhara: An ancient region around the Peshawar valley and adjoining areas of present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan. Gandhara was a central setting for Indo-Scythian rule and cross-cultural exchange.
Azilises: An Indo-Scythian king known from coins, who ruled in the northwest Indian subcontinent around the first century BCE. His bilingual coinage illustrates how Indo-Scythian kings presented their authority.
Indo-Greek Kingdom: A Hellenistic kingdom in parts of Central and South Asia, ruled by Greek or Hellenized dynasties. Indo-Scythian rulers conquered territories formerly held by Indo-Greek kings.
Greco-Bactrian Kingdom: A Hellenistic kingdom centered in Bactria that emerged after its rulers broke from the Seleucid Empire. Its weakening and fragmentation preceded major movements of peoples across Bactria.
Taxila: An ancient city in Gandhara, located near present-day Islamabad, that served as a major political and cultural center. Taxila preserves evidence for Indo-Scythian authority within a long-lived urban center.
Azes II: A ruler named on Indo-Scythian coins, traditionally placed among the later kings of the Azes dynasty. Coins attributed to Azes II help trace the kingdom’s changing chronology.
Gondophares: A first-century CE king who ruled parts of the northwestern Indian subcontinent and founded the Indo-Parthian Kingdom. His Indo-Parthian realm followed Indo-Scythian rule in parts of the northwest.
Bactria: An ancient region centered on the upper Amu Darya, spanning parts of present-day Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Bactria was a key crossroads on the routes linking Central Asian Saka groups with South Asia.
