First Indochina War : A 1946–1954 war between France and the Việt Minh over French rule in Indochina. It ended French colonial rule and set the conditions for Vietnam’s division.
French Indochina : A French colonial federation comprising Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1887 to 1954. Its dissolution left competing movements and borders at the heart of the wars.
Guerrilla warfare : Irregular warfare using ambushes, raids, and mobility against a stronger force. Insurgent forces used it against French, South Vietnamese, and American armies.
Fall of Saigon : The capture of Saigon by North Vietnamese forces on April 30, 1975, ending the Vietnam War. It marked Vietnam’s reunification under communist rule and the end of major American combat.
