Indore State

Indore State was a princely state in central India ruled by the Holkar dynasty. It acceded to independent India in 1948.

Holkar dynasty: A Maratha ruling house that governed Indore and other territories in central India. The dynasty established and ruled Indore State across its history.
Treaty of Mandsaur: The 1818 treaty that ended the Third Anglo-Maratha War for the Holkar ruler and established British influence over Indore. It formalized Indore’s subordinate relationship with the British after military defeat.
Ahilyabai Holkar: An eighteenth-century ruler of the Holkar state, remembered for administration and temple patronage. Her rule established a lasting model of Holkar governance, though her capital was Maheshwar.
United State of Gwalior, Indore and Malwa: A short-lived union of princely states, also called Madhya Bharat, formed in 1948 in central India. Indore joined this union after acceding to India.
Malhar Rao Holkar: A Maratha military commander who founded the Holkar dynasty’s power in Malwa during the eighteenth century. His campaigns and grants laid the foundations of the Indore state.
British paramountcy: The system through which the British Crown exercised superior authority over princely states in the Indian subcontinent. Indore retained internal rule while its external sovereignty was constrained by this system.
Yashwantrao Holkar II: The last ruling Maharaja of Indore State, who reigned from 1926 until the state’s integration into India. He was the Holkar ruler during Indore’s final years as a princely state.
Madhya Bharat: A former Indian state formed in 1948 from princely states in the Gwalior and Indore regions, later merged into Madhya Pradesh. Indore became part of Madhya Bharat before the 1956 reorganization.
Maratha Empire: A major Indian power that expanded from western India across much of the subcontinent from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Indore’s rise began within the expanding Maratha political order.
Residency of Indore: A British political residency that managed relations between the colonial government and princely states in central India. The resident represented British oversight in Indore’s political affairs.
