Inductance

Inductance measures how strongly a changing electric current produces an induced electromotive force. It arises from magnetic fields linked with the circuit and is measured in henries.

Faraday's law of induction: A law stating that changing magnetic flux through a circuit induces an electromotive force. It supplies the voltage–flux relation from which circuit inductance is defined.
Electric current: The rate at which electric charge flows through a conductor or circuit. Inductance relates a change in this quantity to induced voltage.
RL circuit: An electrical circuit containing resistance and inductance, whose current changes over time after switching. Its current transient reveals the timescale set by inductance and resistance.
Capacitance: A measure of how much electric charge a system stores per unit voltage. It stores energy in an electric field, unlike inductance's magnetic-field storage.
Lenz's law: A law stating that an induced current produces magnetic effects opposing the change that caused it. It fixes the opposing sign in the voltage induced by changing current.
Electromotive force: Energy supplied per unit charge by a source or induced effect, expressed as voltage. It is the electrical response that inductance relates to changing current.
LC circuit: A circuit containing an inductor and capacitor that can exchange energy in oscillations. Inductance and capacitance together set its resonant frequency.
Resistance: A measure of how strongly a component opposes electric current and dissipates electrical energy. Resistance opposes current itself, while inductance opposes changes in current.
Magnetic flux: A measure of the magnetic field passing through a specified surface. Inductance connects current to the magnetic flux linked with a circuit.
Magnetic field: A physical field produced by magnets and electric currents that exerts forces on moving charges and magnetic materials. A current creates this field, which stores energy around an inductor.
