Induction generator

An induction machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical power when driven above synchronous speed or supplied with reactive power. It commonly uses a grid or capacitor bank to establish its magnetic field.

Induction motor: An AC motor that produces torque through electromagnetic induction in its rotor. The same machine changes from motoring to generating when its rotor runs above synchronous speed.
Asynchronous machine: An AC machine whose rotor speed differs from the speed of its rotating magnetic field. An induction generator is an asynchronous machine operated with power flowing out of its stator.
Wind turbine: A machine that converts the kinetic energy of wind into electrical power. Induction generators have been widely used in wind turbines for rugged grid-connected generation.
Synchronous generator: An AC generator whose rotor magnetic field rotates in synchronism with the electrical frequency. Unlike a typical induction generator, it can supply reactive power and regulate terminal voltage.
Synchronous speed: The speed of a rotating magnetic field, set by supply frequency and the number of poles. Rotor speed above this threshold gives the machine negative slip and generating operation.
Faraday's law of induction: The law stating that changing magnetic flux through a circuit induces an electromotive force. Relative motion between the rotor and magnetic field induces rotor currents.
Doubly fed induction generator: A wound-rotor induction generator whose rotor connects to the grid through a partial-scale converter. It enables variable-speed wind generation while controlling active and reactive power.
Permanent-magnet synchronous generator: A synchronous generator whose rotor field is produced by permanent magnets. It avoids induction-machine magnetizing current but typically requires power electronics for variable-speed use.
Slip (electrical machines): The fractional difference between a rotating magnetic field's speed and a rotor's speed. Negative slip marks the operating region in which mechanical input becomes electrical output.
Rotating magnetic field: A magnetic field that rotates in space, produced by appropriately phased AC currents. The stator’s rotating field induces currents in the rotor and sets synchronous speed.
