Inductive effect

The displacement of electron density through sigma bonds caused by electronegativity differences or charge. It weakens rapidly with distance along a molecular framework.

Electronegativity: A measure of an atom’s tendency to attract shared electrons in a chemical bond. Electronegativity differences establish the bond polarization transmitted by the inductive effect.
Acid strength: A measure of how readily an acid donates a proton in a specified solvent. Electron-withdrawing substituents can strengthen an acid by stabilizing its conjugate base.
Resonance effect: The influence of electron donation or withdrawal through delocalized pi bonds or lone-pair conjugation. Unlike induction, resonance requires conjugation and acts through pi-electron delocalization.
Bond polarity: Unequal sharing of bonding electrons that gives a covalent bond partial positive and negative ends. Inductive effects extend bond polarity across connected sigma bonds.
Sigma bond: A covalent bond formed by head-on overlap of orbitals, with electron density concentrated along the internuclear axis. The inductive effect is transmitted through this class of covalent bonds.
Conjugate base: The species formed when an acid donates a proton. Its stability often explains how inductive effects alter acid strength.
Mesomeric effect: Electron donation or withdrawal through resonance between a substituent and a conjugated system. It is a resonance-based substituent effect, distinct from sigma-bond induction.
Substituent: An atom or group attached to a parent molecular structure in place of hydrogen or another group. Inductive effects are commonly described by the electronic influence of substituents.
Partial charge: A fractional electrical charge on an atom arising from an uneven distribution of electron density. Inductive polarization creates partial charges on bonded atoms.
Carbocation: An organic ion containing a positively charged carbon atom with only six valence electrons. Electron-donating inductive effects can help stabilize its electron deficiency.
