Indus Basin Irrigation System

A network of dams, barrages, canals, and watercourses that diverts and distributes Indus river water to irrigate farmland in Pakistan.

Indus River: A major South Asian river rising in Tibet and flowing through India and Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. Its flow supplies the system’s main canals and reservoirs.
Upper Bari Doab Canal: A nineteenth-century irrigation canal in Punjab, India, carrying water from the Ravi River basin. It exemplifies early large-scale canal engineering in the region.
